Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!  July 4 the day we celebrate our nation’s independence as established by the Declaration of Independence.  

 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  

 

This phrase within the Declaration, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776,  has shaped America’s morals and standards, as illustrated by the works of Abraham Lincoln during his terms of office in 1860 and 1864.

 

As the Declaration of Independence so eloquently establishes the unalienable, natural rights of all people, the Constitution was established to protect those rights.  We the People of the United States of America, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Prosperity, do ordain and establish the Constitution for the United States of America.    

 

The Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, became effective December 15, 1791.  Some of our civil liberties included in the Bill of Rights are the freedom of speech and religion, freedom of the press and the right to assemble; the right to bear arms; the prohibition of unlawful search and seizures; and the right to a speedy trial.

 

These documents are literary masterpieces that have defined America and shaped it into the great nation that it has become today.  The forethought our founding fathers had is absolutely astonishing.    

 

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.  

 

As we reflect on the freedoms and the liberties we have today, though sometimes infringed upon, let us be ever mindful and forever thankful.
