Pull your pants up
“Pants on the ground, pants on the ground, lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground. With the gold in your mouf, hat turned sideways, lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground.” The song performed by General Larry Platt on American Idol in 2010 gained fame for the 62 year old. When asked by the judges on the set of American Idol what song he was going to sing, he announced his song is called "Pants on the Ground". “We got to pull our pants up,” Platt said.
I bet Durrell Brooks in Lorain, Ohio wishes he had followed the General’s advice. Lorain Municipal Court Judge Mark Mihok held Brooks in contempt of court and gave him three days in jail because his pants were sagging so low that his underwear was showing.
According to News Channel 5, two others within a month had been tossed in the slammer because of their clothing after having been warned by security before entering the courtroom that their pants must be pulled up.
Judge Mihok has said that everyday security has to instruct men to pull their pants up. He says it’s more than just about decorum, he wants everyone who enters his courtroom to feel safe.
So is he saying that a person who wears his pants too low is a danger or a threat? I would have to say that is an unfortunate stereotype.
While I do believe that everyone should maintain a certain level of respect in the courtroom, I do not believe the infraction warranted jail time. That seems a bit harsh to me.
Furthermore, some would argue that it was a violation of rights to arrest the young man, that he was merely making a fashion statement and thereby exercising his right to free speech.
Many agree with General Platt – if you’re walking around with your pants on the ground you’re lookin’ like a fool. I say, to each his own. However, guys, you might want to go ahead and pull ‘em up before you step in the courtroom.
