Stupidest Law Possible

July 19, 2012

Morgan Freeman stated in an interview with Newsweek that the criminalization of marijuana is the stupidest law possible. The actor exclaims:  “Marijuana! Heavens, oh yeah. It’s just the stupidest law possible, given history. You don’t stop people from doing what they want to do, so forget about making it unlawful. You’re just making criminals out of people who aren’t engaged in criminal activity. And we’re spending zillions of dollars trying to fight a war we can’t win! We could make zillions, just legalize it and tax it like we do liquor. It’s stupid.”

Well said Mr. Freeman!  You’re absolutely right.  The money and the resources that are tied up in keeping marijuana use illegal is astronomical.  And for what?  Why is it necessary?  Every claim that critics can come up with can be and has been proven invalid.

Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug, alcohol and tobacco being the first two.  There are no deaths on record caused by marijuana because it is non-toxic thus cannot cause death by overdose.  That is far from the case with alcohol and tobacco.

Studies show that legalizing marijuana does not lead to an increase of marijuana usage or change the way youth perceive marijuana.  Studies also invalidate the theory that marijuana is a gateway drug.

There are 14 states in the US that have passed laws in efforts to decriminalize marijuana.  This means that offenses involving the possession of small amounts of marijuana are treated as a minor violations, such as traffic offenses.  While this is a step in the right direction, the movement is not complete until prohibition of marijuana has ended.  Morgan Freeman said it best:  “We’re spending zillions of dollars trying to fight a war we can’t win! Stupidest law possible.”
