Performance enhancing Drugs
A week after the USADA announces an investigation into Lance Armstrong’s alleged doping, which a federal grand jury declined to indict him on due to a lack of evidence, Roger Clemens is acquitted of all six charges brought against him in federal court. The charges included one count of obstruction of Congress, three counts of making false statements and one count of perjury.
During Clemens’ 24 year career he accomplished much, including 7 Cy Young Awards, 11 All-Star appearances, and 4,672 strikeouts – the third most of any Major League pitcher. “The Rocket” was known for his fast ball. Clemens’ is retired.
And then there was the aforementioned Lance Armstrong, whose accomplishments include 7 Tour de France titles. There are quite a few of his peers who say that the athlete indeed doped to improve his performance. Armstrong vehemently denies all allegations, including the accusations of Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his Tour de France title for the same reason, and Tyler Hamilton, who retired after testing positive twice. Both Landis and Hamilton claim they saw Armstrong inject himself many times like they did as well as countless others. Armstrong has retired from cycling but competes in triathlons.
Barry Bonds. Six months ago the super athlete was placed on six months of probation and 30 days of house of arrest for obstruction of justice in an illegal steroid case against him. Bonds made history in 2007 when he broke Hank Aaron’s homerun record.
Using performance enhancers is cheating and it’s unfair. I believe there are a significant number of athletes across the nation that maintain a level of integrity and don’t do it despite the notion that everyone does. Professional athletes are admired and held in high regard by little guys who strive to be just like them, just as good as they are. They are heroes. Is it necessary to inject an illegal substance into your veins to achieve that status? I don’t think so.
