President Broke His Promise
In our society we are supposed to be led by people who will do our will when we send them to Washington. Yet, the ever-growing sense is that our leaders are not doing our will, but the will of those who get them and keep them in power. When President Obama refuses to answer questions about his intent with regards to the legalization of marijuana We The People should pay attention come election day. Instead of answering a question posed to him at a public town hall meeting in 2009, President Obama laughed off the question about legalizing marijuana with no explanation.
As recently as this month, President Obama again violated his own rules and refused to answer the question that received the most votes because it was related to the legalization of marijuana. In 2004 Obama said he thinks we need to decriminalize, but not legalize, marijuana, and we need to rethink the war on drugs. Yet, in this video from 2008 he said he supports medical marijuana, and believes it is "entirely appropriate" to allow doctors to prescribe marijuana. He even went so far as to say that he would not "use Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on [the marijuana legalization] issue." (See 2:11 in the video). Yet, the Justice Department is doing just that right now. There are even reports that they are posing as criminal defendants an interviewing attorneys in an attempt to trap them in conspiracy crimes in California, and maybe elsewhere.
I am not supporting President Obama, or any of his potential competitor's at this point in the race. But, you can bet I will be following whether they do what they said they would do, and whether their policies align with what is important to me. I encourage you to do the same. Unless they are held accountable, they will do what the policy makers behind the curtains advise them to do. Unfortunately, that does not seem to work out in our best interest.
